WHAT IS MERV AND WHAT IS BEST FOR YOU

When was the last time you looked at your air filter and saw the initials MERV? MERV stands for Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value, and it is the industry rating standard for air filters. MERV ratings range from 1-20---the increase in rating the better capability of filtering out more particles.

To simplify, we breakdown the MERV into four levels of filters that you need to understand as a homeowner or renter:

The MERV 6 is the basic economy filter that will catch basic household dust and pollen. However, it is not the best filter for indoor air quality but will keep dust out of your central air system. The MERV 6 is for those on a tight budget. The MERV 6 is not the best for indoor air quality, but it will keep dust out of your air system.

The MERV 8 filter traps mold spores, pollen, dust, and dust mites. Pretty gross when you think about it, this stuff can float around your house and spread.

The MERV 11 is the next on the list, this filter traps everything already mentioned plus pet dander, cigarette smoke, smog, and airborne from cough and sneezes. The MERV 11 is a must if you have kids and/or pets as the MERV 11 will filter out most of the common air pollutants and irritants. Those that suffer from mild to severe allergies will benefit from the advantages of the MERV 11 filter.

The last on the list is the MERV 13, this one is so fine that it traps microscopic viruses and bacteria. MERV 13 and up is typically used in healthcare settings to filter the smallest of particles. This filter level is best for those that are immune compromised and/or need additional filtration of their home.
